Alaska’s Brown Bear Photography Expedition

What To Expect In Bear Country

Step Into Coastal Brown Bear Territory

Step off the bush plane and into one of the wildest landscapes in North America — where coastal brown bears roam tidal flats, salmon-rich streams cut through dense rainforest, and weather shapes every moment.

Conditions here shift quickly — light, tide, rain, wind — and no two days are ever the same. That unpredictability is what makes photographing Alaska’s brown bears so powerful. Every outing offers the chance to witness raw, unscripted behavior in a true wilderness setting.

Southeast Alaska is one of the world’s premier destinations for coastal brown bear photography. From solitary giants moving through misty estuaries to mothers guiding cubs across open flats, the photographic potential here is extraordinary.

This isn’t a staged encounter. It’s real wilderness. And that’s exactly why it matters.

When We Fly

Upon landing in a remote wilderness area, we may be greeted by U.S. Forest Service rangers who’ll review safety protocols and current wildlife activity. From there — the magic begins.

We set up gear.
We review composition.
We dial in technical settings.
We talk light, positioning, and reading bear behavior.

This is one of the wettest temperate rainforests on Earth. Rain is part of the atmosphere here — often light, misty, and cinematic. Come prepared for moisture, and you’ll be rewarded with dramatic conditions that elevate your images.

We stay out as long as wildlife and weather allow. As the light softens or conditions shift, our bush plane returns to bring us back to Juneau.

That evening, we reset, recharge, review images if desired — and prepare to do it again.

When Weather Grounds Us

Alaska does not operate on human schedules.

If weather prevents flying, we don’t lose the day — we adapt.

Options include:

• Bald eagle photography around Juneau
• Exploring glacier areas and photographing dramatic landscapes
• Coastal wildlife scouting
• A private 3–4 hour whale watching charter
• Working from scenic viewpoints with mountain and fjord backdrops

We also have a comfortable SUV for local access and flexibility.

An additional buffer day is built into the itinerary specifically to account for weather. Our goal is to maximize flying opportunities while maintaining the highest safety standards.

Flights are never guaranteed — but effort, adaptability, and creative opportunity always are.
